What To Do If A Federal Agent Contacts You (Part II)

Federal Agents Are Calling? Here's What You MUST Do.

A call or knock on the door from federal agents can be unsettling, to say the least. Whether they identify themselves as FBI, BIA, DEA, IRS, or another agency, it's crucial to remain calm and understand your rights. Here's what you absolutely must do:

  • Be Polite, But Don't Answer Questions: You are not obligated to speak with them. Politely state that you wish to speak with your attorney before answering any questions. Do not try to explain your situation or deny any allegations. Anything you say can and will be used against you.

  • Ask for Identification and Their Agency: Note their names, badge numbers, and the agency they represent.

  • Do Not Consent to Any Searches: Unless they have a valid warrant, do not allow them to enter your home, car, or any other property. Clearly state that you do not consent to any searches.

  • Immediately Contact an Attorney: This is the most critical step. A federal criminal defense attorney can advise you of your rights and handle all communication with the agents on your behalf.

  • Do Not Discuss the Contact with Others (Initially): Be cautious about who you discuss the contact with, as those conversations could potentially be used against you. Your attorney will advise you on this.

Being contacted by federal agents is a serious matter. Protecting your rights from the outset is paramount. Don't wait – contact Suli Law, PLLC immediately.
